We Worthy Women is building connections, capacity and knowledge to prevent gender-based violence
Gender-Based Violence in Canada
Gender-based violence (GBV) is a public health issue that has long lasting negative effects that reach far beyond the individuals who directly experience them. GBV is defined as violence based on gender norms and unequal power dynamics, perpetrated against someone because of their gender, gender expression, gender identity, or perceived gender. GBV is intersectional and interconnected with other forms of injustice and discrimination. To prevent gender-based violence, we must adapt solutions to multiple layers of social identities and systems of oppression.
Gender-based violence is preventable - we all have a part to play in stopping violence before it starts.
40% of Canadian women, girls, and non-binary people have experienced some form of intimate partner violence in their lifetime.
In 2024, Nova Scotia declared intimate partner violence an epidemic.
On average, a woman or girl is killed every two days in Canada, most often by men.
Nova Scotia has the highest rates of human trafficking in Canada.
